State Rep. Ellen Schutt has unveiled a bill that would nearly double a tax credit the state gives married couples.
It’s under a new bill that’s part of a bigger package of Republican-led tax relief legislation. Schutt, a Clinton Republican, says the bill would expand the maximum allowable state tax credit to couples filing jointly from $480 to $870 — a change other lawmakers say could equal an average tax cut of about $380 for married couples filing jointly.
Schutt says the bill is aimed at helping young, married couples who both earn a taxable income.
It wasn’t clear if the bill would take effect this tax year or next, although another bill in the bigger package, a reboot of tax brackets for upper-income earners, would take effect in July.
