The Rock County Medical Examiner’s office is releasing the name of the man who authorities say died following an apparent officer-involved shooting during a violent attack on Beloit’s east side April 28th.
According to a release, 33-year-old Beloit resident Michael P. Ward was pronounced dead at a local hospital after an incident police described as a person attacking another with blades in the 1700 block of Ashland Avenue in the city’s Merrill neighborhood.
The Medical Examiner said authorities completed a forensic examination April 29, but an official cause and manner of death as of Tuesday afternoon are “pending,” with “additional testing” under way.
The medical examiner referred to the Ward as “the individual who died” during an “officer-involved incident.”
Police previously reported an officer had fatally shot an unnamed man in the Ashland Avenue incident April 28. Police said at the time, officers had told a person who was rushing at another person with blades to stop, but the person ignored them.
Police indicated the person officers shot was taken to a hospital, where they later were pronounced dead.
Police said an officer involved was on leave as a standard part of an investigation.
The incident remains under investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Justice and the Rock County Medical Examiner’s Office.
