State investigators name veteran Beloit police officer Cole Gille as the cop authorities say shot and killed a man in a reported stabbing last week.
The Department of Criminal Investigations says Gille fatally shot 54-year-old Gregory W. Tracy after he’d stabbed a woman on Beloit’s west side May 16. The agency says Tracy continued to make violent threats in front of police.
Officers say they tried to use less lethal means to subdue Tracy, but that did not work.
State investigators say Gille shot Tracy, and the man died at the scene, despite life-saving efforts. Police say they recovered blades at the scene.
The Department of Criminal Investigations continues to investigate the police-involved shooting. The agency will forward results to the Rock County District Attorney’s Office.
Authorities say the woman stabbed continues to recover from injuries at a hospital.
Gille has been a Beloit police officer six years.
