A 17-year-old Janesville man is under arrest in a neighborhood shooting in the city’s Fourth Ward that spurred a short lock down of the Janesville YMCA Friday afternoon.
Janesville police say they responded to the 100 block of West Holmes Street for a person shot. The caller reported a female was shot by an unknown suspect wearing a mask who fled.
Officers responding put the nearby YMCA and its daycare centers under lock down while they searched for a suspect.
Janesville police say they learned through an investigation that the suspected shooter, Michai W. Wortham, was the person who’d called 911 to report the gunfire about 11 a.m Friday.
The shooting victim, a juvenile, was treated and released. Police haven’t given details about what may have sparked the shooting.
Wortham is being held at the Rock County jail on charges of first-degree reckless injury, first-degree reckless endangering safety, and obstructing an officer.
Officials at the YMCA told Big Radio they hustled all kids onsite to a safe place inside the building during the lock down. They said everyone was safe and secure, and police lifted the lock down without incident.
