A gas leak that affected three dozen homes around the 200 block of South Jackson in Janesville could have been avoided.
A contractor removing a stump damaged a two-inch gas main after failing to call Digger’s Hotline before starting the work.
Alliant Energy Spokesperson Tony Palese says crews were requested by the Janesville Fire Department a little after noon Thursday.
The line was expected to be repaired and customers re-lit by late Thursday afternoon.
Palese says it serves as a good reminder for anyone doing work in their yard to call 8-1-1 first.
