New cellphone use guidelines await Janesville’s high school students when school resumes next month.
Laura Mattison, president of the school district’s teachers union, says high school teachers raised concerns about student cellphone use in a survey last spring, citing disruptions to the learning environment and effects on mental health.
To address these problems, principals Alison Bjoin at Craig and Chris Laue at Parker crafted an updated policy they hope can be more effectively implemented.
The changes more specifically target cellphones and ear buds, emphasize that district-issued Chromebooks can fulfill most students’ tech needs, and alter the structure of consequences. Mattison hopes the changes will help with accountability.
Mattison says administrators will assess how the changes are working early in the school year.
