In the 1980s, you had 20 minutes to escape a residential fire before the home became fully engulfed. Today, that time is down to just three or four minutes.

City of Janesville Fire Marshal Nathan Simmons says 60% of fatal fires happen in structures without a working smoke detector.

Simmons says it’s recommended to have a smoke detector in each bedroom, one outside of every bedroom, and one on every level whether there is a bedroom or not.

The Janesville Fire Department and the American Red Cross are teaming up to install free fire alarms inside any residence or apartment in the city of Janesville on Sept. 5.

You can sign up to get some alarms installed by either calling the Janesville Fire Department at 608-755-3050 or by visiting the Red Cross Wisconsin smoke alarm website.
