A Janesville man faces an attempted homicide charge in Winnebago County, Illinois.
Meovonte L. Cooper, 22, was arrested early Saturday morning after a sheriff’s deputy heard gunshots in the area of Machesney Park Elementary School and police found a man in the area with a gunshot wound.
While the deputy searched for the source of the gunfire, a 911 call reporting the gunshot victim came in.
The deputy saw a vehicle driven by Cooper leaving the area. Police say a 9mm handgun was on Cooper’s passenger side floorboard.
Other officers responding to the 911 call found a 21-year-old man who was shot in the back. He was taken to a hospital where he was in critical condition.
Cooper was denied pretrial release at a court appearance Monday. Other charges against Cooper include aggravated battery with a firearm and unlawful use of weapons. His next court date is scheduled for Oct. 3.
