Authorities identify the woman who was killed Friday night in downtown Whitewater as a UW-Whitewater gymnast.
Whitewater police say they found 21-year-old Kara Welsh dead at an apartment at 147 W. Whitewater St. after responding to a report of a person with a gunshot wound just before midnight Saturday.
A 23-year-old man who knew Welsh and has not yet been identified pending the filing of a criminal complaint, was also at the apartment when police arrived.
Police say they learned there had been an altercation between Welsh and the man before Welsh was shot. The man was arrested and jailed at the Walworth County Jail in Elkhorn.
He faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct while armed.
Welsh, of Plainfield, Illinois, was a junior on the UW-Whitewater gymnastics team. She was an all-American and all-conference performer in the vault during the 2021-22 season.
