Beloit School Board to consider budget cuts at meeting next Tuesday

The Beloit School Board will weigh painful budget cuts at its next regular meeting.

A special meeting scheduled earlier this week was canceled. Board President Tia Johnson says that was because Superintendent Dr. Willie Garrison needed more time to finalize plans for the Kolak Education Center.

The full board will hear cut proposals during Tuesday night’s meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. Johnson says Garrison will present his suggestions for cuts at the Kolak center, then a representative of the ad hoc budget committee will go over other cut proposals.

The district had to find millions of dollars to take out of the 2024-25 budget after a referendum question failed last spring. It convened the ad hoc committee to carry out that difficult task.

That group’s chairperson presented cut suggestions to the school board’s Business, Operations and Finance Committee last week. They included reductions in the number of assistant principals, school counselors and psychologists, and in the number of staffers at the Kolak center.
