A long-anticipated demolition project will soon be underway in downtown Beloit.
Crews will begin removing rooftop units at 80 and 100 E. Grand Ave. on Monday to start the tear-down of the entire structure. That includes the buildings perched over the Rock River.
Those buildings are making way for a fresh stretch of downtown riverwalk and a proposed four-story, mixed-use Hendricks development on the site.
The city will pay $500,000 for riverwalk construction; state grant funding and the developer are covering the costs demolition.
The current buildings have stood there for decades but have been vacant in recent years. Most recently, one was occupied by online retail website FatWallet until that company ceased operations in 2017.
