Final approval of a Beloit park improvement project could come by the end of this month.

The city’s Plan Commission will hear a report on the second phase of improvements to Turtle Creek Park at a meeting (Wednesday).

The proposed improvements already have the blessings of the city’s parks advisory committee and the landmarks commission and just needs the Plan Commission and the city council to sign off.

City approval could come at the council’s meeting on October 21st. Work at the site wouldn’t begin until next year.

Changes at the park will include removal of a bathhouse built in 1938 and additions of a bike maintenance station, restrooms and commemorative installations to remind visitors of the park’s history.

In the early to mid-20th century when public amenities were not equally accessible, the park was a gathering place for Beloit’s Black community. The city designated the park as a local landmark in 1998.
