Rock County’s top elections official will take part in a forum later this month to discuss the mechanics and technology of election administration.
County Clerk Lisa Tollefson will join election attorneys Ben Ginsburg and Bob Bauer and a representative of the Wisconsin Elections Commission at the Sheraton Hotel in Madison for a luncheon hosted by the Wisconsin Technology Council.
Tollefson and council President Tom Still hope the nonpartisan discussion will help dispel misconceptions members of the public might have about how elections work.
Tollefson also took a minute during her busy run-up to Election Day to explain how she, her staff and her team of volunteers keep the vote secure.
Tollefson says one aspect of election security that can be overlooked is the in-person security on Election Day. Poll workers do their jobs in a buddy system of sorts that’s in place to ensure election workers are never operating on their own.
The clerk also makes sure to explain that the tabulation machines have no internet connection and that there are paper backups of every ballot in the state.
But sometimes all the explaining in the world is no substitute for actually doing the work. Tollefson says volunteering to work the polls on Election Day can help connect the dots for some people better than any forum discussion might.
The luncheon will start at 11:30 on Oct. 22. Tickets are $10 for students and returning veterans, $25 for members of the Wisconsin Technology Council and $35 for nonmembers.
