For the second straight year, the School District of Janesville has a net loss in open enrollment.
The decrease was just 23 students, but it’s another year of decline after years of triple-digit net gains in the district. It’s also the district’s largest net loss ever.
Janesville’s high schools had 99 kids open enroll in, but 102 elementary schoolers enrolled out along with 20 middle schoolers.
Overall enrollment in Janesville schools was down, as well. A pupil count last month found 32 fewer students than the same time last year — a total of 9,321 students this year, down from 9,355 in 2023.
District staff says declining public school enrollment is a national and statewide trend since 2019 and goes hand in hand with declining birth rates.
