A Hazmat team is cleaning up an apparent chemical spill at Highway 51 and the Portland Avenue bridge north of downtown Beloit.

Police apparently shut down the area after a truck carrying liquid nitrogen tipped over around 11:30 a.m.

The state patrol says Highway 51 and White Avenue could be blocked a few hours after the accident.

Firefighters on scene tell Big Radio they’ve advised businesses within 350 feet of the accident to close their doors temporarily and send customers out of the immediate vicinity.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area.

The semitrailer driver hauling the liquid nitrogen was transported to a hospital with apparent injuries, city of Beloit spokeswoman Sarah Lock tells Big Radio.

Witnesses on scene tell Big Radio they saw a truck apparently tipped near the bridge, although more details weren’t immediately available.

The Portland Avenue bridge is just north of the Beloit College powerhouse.

Big Radio will bring you more details as they’re available.
