School District of Janesville officials hope a proposed course addition can expand extracurricular opportunities for high schoolers.

Course proposals for the 2025-26 school year presented during Monday’s Personnel, Policy and Curriculum Committee meeting include making the Spotlighters Show Choir a class during the school day instead of an after-school extracurricular.

Chris Medenwaldt, the district’s director of secondary education, says the change will eliminate time conflicts for students who want to be in show choir and also participate in other extracurriculars, including sports.

The district is also proposing a new slate of educational courses outside existing early childhood classes that Medenwaldt says would be part of a future educator academy.

Another addition the district is working on would be a partnership with Craftsman with Character, Mercyhealth and SSM Health for a health care course. Medenwaldt says the district is still waiting on commitments from the health services.

Approval or rejection of the course proposals is expected next month.
