Beloit school officials eye up another potential spring referendum.
The Beloit School Board at its meeting Tuesday night authorized Superintendent Dr. Willie Garrison to begin exploring what kind of referendum to pursue for April 2025 and, crucially, how much to ask for.
Garrison also hopes to hire a consultant to help with public outreach between now and next spring.
An April 2023 operational question asked to exceed the district’s state revenue limit by $14 million one year and $9 million the next. An accompanying capital question was a $19.5 million request.
This year’s operational question asked to exceed the limit by $9 million for the next three years.
All those questions failed.
Beloit’s school mill rate is down to less than $2, one of the lowest in the state, and officials had to make 11th-hour cuts this fall to balance the current school budget.
Referendums of all kinds enjoyed a high success rate across the state during this month’s general election. Janesville, Milton and Evansville all passed school referendums.
