Beloit’s board of education commits to an April referendum.
The board and district staff under Superintendent Dr. Willie Garrison still have to work out the details — what kind, how much — ahead of the Jan. 21 deadline to have referendum questions finalized.
Tom Hankins was the only member to vote no on the motion to commit, citing a desire to know more specifically what the board would be asking for. He also worried the district might miss out on collecting public feedback on an issue that ultimately be decided by voters.
Garrison and other board members, including Megan Miller and Brian Anderson, argued that regardless of the specifics, there was going to be a need for the district to ask for some kind of budgetary help.
Board members and district administrators will participate in a referendum workshop Saturday where they will go over district needs, hope to gather some public input and then strategize and plot their next steps.
