Madison police say a teacher and a student were killed after a teen student opened fire with a handgun at Abundant Life Christian School Monday.

In an update, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes says police the shooter was a teenage student and police found them dead at the school on Madison’s east side shortly after 11 a.m. Monday.

There’s no indication so far of what prompted the student to open fire this morning, but authorities know the shooter used a handgun.

Barnes says a half-dozen students are hospitalized with injuries, and three were being treated for injuries that are “life-threatening.” Four-hundred students K-12 attend the school.

Barnes says the shooting was confined to one area of the school — an area where teenage students attend class. The student killed was a teenager.

There’s no indication that students in any other areas of the school were harmed.

Police have reached the shooter’s family. They’re now obtaining search warrants to gather evidence about the circumstances of the shooting.

Barnes says authorities were still reunifying students with parents.

This story updates the number of students injured in the shooting, according to police.
