City of Janesville removes 17 dead oak trees from Lustig Park

Every year the City of Janesville holds a firewood sale that give citizens the opportunity to cut up and haul away a dead tree that’s been felled by Parks Division crews.

Parks Supervisor Jason Schlimgen says crews are currently removing 17 mature Oak trees at Lustig Park for the sale. Crew typically remove six to seven trees a year from Lustig.

Schlimgen says a combination of spongy moth, Oak wilt and a drought have wreaked havoc on Lustig’s iconic Oaks in recent years.

He says as the City re-plants trees it’s doing a better job of diversifying the species so that a disease like Dutch elm or a pest like Emerald Ash Borer isn’t able to create such devastation.

Schlimgen says during the firewood sale, citizens can sign up for a lottery that allows them to take an entire tree for anywhere from $5 to $20.
