On Monday, Janesville’s plan commission tackles a public hearing on the year’s first affordable housing proposal.

Madison developer Horizon seeks a re-zoning to allow mixed-use residential development along a future extension of Sandhill Drive. It would go up on what is currently an urban farm field near the Pine Tree Plaza.

It would be north of a new section of Sandhill Drive that would connect residential neighborhoods to the Deerfield Drive retail spur.

The development would be a 49-unit multifamily apartment complex on the south end of a swath of land between Wright Road and Deerfield Drive. It’s part of a larger residential zone the city says would eventually transition to single-family housing to the north, where the land borders the Briarcrest subdivision.

The hearing comes after Horizon held a neighborhood meeting last week. Another neighborhood meeting focused on the Sandhill Drive extension is planned Feb. 5.
