Milton city officials approve a set of changes to city policy governing the issuance of permits for special events.

The two biggest changes: the council will vote and have final say on permit applications with city staff providing recommendations on those applications. The city will also require event organizers to pay off city costs surpassing $5,000.

Council members says that cost-sharing provision likely will affect only the city’s largest public events, like the Fourth of July celebration and Civil War Days.

Member Ryan Holbrook suggested not enacting the cost-sharing measure until 2026 because organizers for events this year might not have raised enough money to pay that additional cost.

The motion that passed will apply to events held this year, and Holbrook voted against it.

A corresponding ordinance change to bring city code in line with the new policies is expected to follow.
