A 60-year-old Janesville woman is accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars from her two elderly and disabled siblings, and then using the ill gotten gains to send Apple gift cards to scammers posing as celebrities.
According to the criminal complaint, Rock County Adult Protective Services called Janesville Police to report concerns that Darlene Hubbard was financially exploiting her two siblings for which she has power of attorney.
Through investigation, police learned one of the siblings was suffering from Alzheimer’s and living in a nursing home, the other has intellectual disabilities and lives with Hubbard and another roommate at an apartment in Janesville.
Investigations found that not only was Hubbard taking money from both siblings’ accounts for her own use, but she wasn’t paying the bills for the nursing home, causing that sibling to be more than $12,000 behind.
Hubbard eventually admitted to taking the money and claimed that she had sent about $1,000 in gift cards to celebrities she had met online, including Toby Keith’s son, Reba McIntyre and Dolly Parton.
Hubbard is scheduled to make her initial appearance in Rock County Court on two counts of felony theft on Monday.
