Beloit School District could tackle almost all of a projected $6.2 million budget shortfall by laying off nearly three-dozen district administrators, teachers, and support staff.
Tuesday, Beloit schools Superintendent Willie Garrison showed the school board a list of possible cuts to district employees — 33 employees in all.
Garrison gave a boil down he called a “hard conversation” that suggests the district could cut 24 teachers and support staff, and 9 district administrators. The layoffs along with pay freezes could save $5.3 million. It comes as the district faces down financial woes in the wake of a district spending referendum that voters shot down April 1st.
Other areas of savings Garrison said might come from the district holding off on buying new laptops, plus some cuts to athletics and elective courses, alongside delays to some building remodels.
Garrison says the district will learn this summer if the new biennial state budget presents a brighter picture for the district.
