A 36-year-old Beloit man is charged in federal court with detaining and opening U.S. mail while working as a U.S. Postal Service employee.
The U.S. Attorney’s office says between February and August of 2024 Cale Tinder took letters, cards, and items sent through the mail that he was entrusted to deliver, opening some of the items and storing the undelivered mail at his home in Beloit.
If convicted, Tinder faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
In January Tinder took a plea deal in Rock County Court in relation to a standoff with Beloit Police in the 2500 block of Riverside Drive in Beloit in September of 2024.
Town of Beloit police responded to a disturbance where the suspect reportedly threatened a woman with a firearm.
The Rock County Sheriff’s Office says the woman was able to leave the residence prior to the arrival of law enforcement, but a juvenile female remained. Sheriff’s officials say after multiple hours, Tinder exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident.
The girl was also released without injury.
Tinder plead guilty to failure to comply with officers and no contest to misdemeanor disorderly conduct.
Judge Jeffrey Kuglitsh withheld his finding of guilt on the first charge are part of a felony hold open agreement, but found him guilty of disorderly conduct. Tinder was sentenced to serve two years of probation.
