The Rock County Sheriff’s Office confirms that the 58-year-old Milton man who died earlier this week as a result of a three-vehicle crash was retired Captain Jay Wood.

Beloit Police say the crash happened just after 7:00 p.m. on Monday in the 14-hundred block of Madison Road.

Investigation determined a blue sedan rear-ended a tan sedan driven by Wood, causing it to veer into oncoming traffic, where it was hit by another vehicle.

Wood was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Rock County Medical Examiner’s Office says preliminary results of a forensic evaluation confirm that Wood died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver of the blue sedan was cited for following too closely, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, and no vehicle registration.

Further charges could be pending.

Wood started at the Sheriff’s Office in 1999 as a deputy and worked his way up to captain before retiring in 2020.  He received a Sheriff’s Award in 2013 for his work establishing the first county-wide traffic enforcement campaign.
