Janesville schools will again provide free meals to students this summer.

The federal Summer Food Service Program ensures students from low-income families can access healthy food even when school is out. The program’s first day in Janesville will be Monday, June 9.

Liz Leedle, the School District of Janesville’s nutrition manager, says anybody age 18 and younger and their parents can get the meals. Registration is not required, and there is no income requirement or any requirement to be enrolled in Janesville schools.

All 17 district schools will be serving meals at various times throughout the summer, and food will also be distributed and Bond Park, the Boys & Girls Club, and Hedberg Public Library. The meals do have to be eaten on site.

Last year, Leedle says the district provided an average of about 1,100 meals per day.
