Rock County Board to consider contract for grandstand renovations at fairgrounds

After another summer of grandstand musical entertainment wanes, we might hear the sound of construction drifting from the Rock County 4-H Fairgrounds in the fall.

County supervisors budgeted $800,000 to renovate the nearly century-old fair grandstand this year. The plan includes installing new handrails in the walking aisles; replacing the wooden seating benches with aluminum ones; stripping old, leaded paint from the structure; and applying a coat of fireproof paint.

The General Services Committee on Tuesday approved an under-budget contract with Glen Fern Construction out of Lake Geneva to complete the work.

The full county board will consider the contract at its meeting June 12.

County Facilities Director Brent Sutherland says he would expect work to begin this fall and wrap up by next spring — in time for the 2026 edition of the fair.
