A June 7 preliminary hearing is set for the 20-year-old Janesville man charged in the brutal stabbing death of his 8-year-old sister.
Dayveon Lathrop appeared before Judge Derrick Grubb Tuesday afternoon for a review hearing on charges of first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse.
Judge Grubb found Lathrop is competent to stand trial, and set cash bond at $1.5 million. Lathrop has been held without bail at the Rock County Jail since March after his attorneys raised the issue of competency.
Lathrop had previously been on a waiting list for a court-ordered, inpatient psychological evaluation at a Madison-area psychiatric facility. The tests were to help a judge determine Lathrop’s mental competency.
According to a criminal complaint, Lathrop stabbed his sister to death and then tried to hide her body in a storage tote also stuffed with bleach, peroxide and other cleaning products while their dad was out shopping at Menards.
In addition to the cash bond, Lathrop is not allowed to have contact with the family of the victim, he’s not allowed to possess any weapons, and he can’t consume drugs or alcohol.
