Partial closure of Avalon Road/Highway 11 scheduled for this weekend

This weekend, construction work will require a partial closure of the I-39/90 and WIS 11 (Avalon Road) interchange, south of Janesville. Starting 10 p.m. Friday (Oct. 21) until 6 a.m. Monday, October 24, the I-39/90 northbound ramps to and from WIS 11 (Avalon Road) or Exit 177 will be closed to all traffic. Avalon Road, between the interchange ramps and County J, will also be closed to all traffic during this timeframe. Motorists are required to use alternate routes during these closures, and signed detour routes will be provided. The southbound Interstate ramps to and from WIS 11 will remain open during the weekend.
Once the interchange reopens on Monday morning, October 24, the Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) movements will be operational in a temporary configuration with one lane in each direction. The new interchange design shifts traffic to the opposite side of the road at traffic signals, allowing for free-flow, left turns onto the Interstate (see attached graphic). All lanes of the DDI – two in each direction – are anticipated to open by mid-November.
Although new to Wisconsin, DDIs are in use in other communities across the United States and have proven very successful in managing traffic flow and meeting the needs of all users. The benefits include improved safety, increased capacity and efficiency, reduced backup congestion and easier navigation. This work and closures are weather dependent and subject to change. Motorists are reminded to pay attention and drive with caution through all work zones.
