Janesville police have named a person arrested after a pair of shootings early Sunday left Craig High School and a nearby Masonic lodge struck with bullets.

Janesville Police Detectives say 24-year-old Janesville man Dalton Talley is in Rock County Jail on suspicion he used a gun to shoot out a glass entryway door at Craig High School. Security footage apparently shows the school got hit about 2:15 a.m. on Sunday.

Police say they found fragments of a bullet they say struck the door of the school at 401 S. Randall Ave. Police investigative notes that an assistant Rock County district attorney read in a jail court hearing for Talley on Friday afternoon say police think Talley shot “a projectile” from a vehicle.

In Friday’s jail court hearing, Rock County Court Commissioner Jack Hoag set Talley’s bond at $2,000.

The Rock County D.A.’s office and Talley’s lawyer asked for a signature bond, which is a signed statement saying a person can be released from jail if they agree to show up for court hearings later. They told Hoag that Talley has no criminal record, and he works a job at a local retail distribution outlet.

Hoag didn’t bite on the D.A.’s request. Hoag told the court he is disturbed at the allegation that someone shot a school with a bullet, saying he didn’t care if the shot was fired at 2 a.m. on a Sunday.

Hoag said “maybe the only thing worse” than someone shooting a gun at a school would be if that person had shot at a police department building.

Police have not said whether Talley is also suspected in a separate, reported shooting that authorities say blew out multiple windows at the Masonic Center in the overnight hours Sunday.

The Masonic Center is at 2322 E. Milwaukee St. The Masonic lodge is about a half-mile northeast of Craig High School.

Janesville police Lt. Jennifer Seeger tells Big Radio a detective had been assigned to investigate both shootings, and police think the shootings happened around the same time frame Sunday.

Police would not discuss Talley’s arrest further, other than to say there is no ongoing threat to local schools or the community. Talley was taken in custody Thursday.

He faces expected charges of criminal property damage, and possession and discharge of a firearm in a school zone.
