Universal Recycling Technologies responds to OSHA allegations

A local company feels blind-sided by more than $200,000 in fines issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration this week.

Universal Recycling Technologies President Ken Thomas says the company has been working with OSHA for close to 20 months working to get in compliance after an inspection in April of 2023 found employees being exposed to unsafe levels of lead and cadmium.

Thomas says URT takes its obligation to keep its employees safe very seriously.

Thomas says URT has invested well over $150,000, put in a lot of man hours, and worked with outside consultants to design and implement engineering controls that will get the root cause of the air quality in their facility on Beloit Avenue in Janesville.

Based in Janesville, Universal Recycling Technologies also has locations in New Hampshire, Oregon, and Texas.

Representatives from OSHA did not respond to a request for comment.
