Authorities are combing the Rock River in downtown Janesville after multiple reports that someone jumped off the Court Street bridge and into the water.

Janesville Police and the Rock County Sheriff’s Office had patrols scouring along the east and west river walls between Court Street and Racine Street, and the sheriff’s office had a search boat out on the river, at about 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Janesville Fire Department officials say authorities got “multiple reports” around 6 p.m. that someone had jumped off the Court Street bridge and landed in the river — although as of around 7 p.m., the fire department says authorities had not spotted anyone in the water.

Officials say the person reportedly jumped in the river in an area where the water is between 4 feet and 7 feet deep with a current and an undertow.

A fire department official says they’d turned the scene over to Janesville police and the sheriff’s office.

Police on scene declined to give more details. One officer would only say authorities were responding to reports someone jumped in the river.

Big Radio will update this report as more information becomes available.
