Clean-up continues following severe thunderstorms

(Gazette photo)  Clean-up well underway after Wednesday night’s storms.  The first round of storms hit Janesville at 6:46 p.m. A second wave of storms rolled through the area at about 10:15 p.m.   Winds up to 60 miles per hour were recorded.  Janesville Police Sergeant Ben Thompson says between 80 and 100 hazardous conditions were reported throughout the evening including downed trees and power lines.  Janesville Fire Battalion Chief Scott Running says more than 20 or their calls for service included downed trees and branches affecting power lines.  The Beloit Fire Department recorded some 65 reports of downed trees and branches affecting power lines.  Beloit Fire also reports up to 1400 people were without power at the height of the storm.  An Alliant Energy online map at one time showed Janesville had six power outages, affecting hundreds of people.  Rock County Emergency Dispatch also reports an unusually high number of calls throughout the night. One supervisor says close to twice the number of dispatchers on a normal shift were working at the height of the storm.  Sporadic power outages remained into Thursday morning.   The Rock County Sheriff’s Office reports winds tipped a semitrailer truck at County A and Emerald Grove Road.  Winds also tore the roof off a barn at Highway 14 and Scharine Road.  Small hail reported on both the north and south side of Janesville.
