Rock County Sheriff facing censure from County Board

The Department of Justice may have found that Rock County Sheriff Robert Spoden didn’t break any laws when he involved himself in a Janesville Police investigation, but that’s not stopping the County Board from taking action.

County Board Supervisor Rock Richard introduced a resolution Wednesday evening which points out ethics and standards of the Sheriff’s Office that Spoden may have violated.

Richard says Spoden violated the Sheriff’s Office’s mission statement, standards of conduct, and code of ethics and it’s important the resolution is reviewed as the county board is the only body who can censure the sheriff when necessary.

Janesville Police who were investigating an underage drinking party this past summer that Spoden’s son attended say the sheriff tried to get them to drop the investigation, and advised witnesses not to speak to police.

The resolution will be referred to committee.
