Janesville School District proposes ending Chinese language classes for elementary students

Citizens who live in the Janesville School District don’t appear pleased with a proposal to phase out the Chinese language program for elementary students.
The proposal before the Board of Education Tuesday night would phase out Chinese classes for third graders next year and the following years the classes for fourth and fifth graders would be eliminated. Instead all students would be allowed to take Chinese in sixth grad as part of a language survey course.
District staff told the Board of Education Tuesday night that currently, about 140 students are taking Chinese at the elementary school level. By the time kids reach eighth grade, fewer than 20 students are taking it.
