The Janesville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce that Janesville’s tourism economy continued to expand in 2018 with a 2.7% increase over 2017. A study conducted by Tourism Economics shows the impact that tourism had on Janesville and Rock County.
The following statistics show Janesville and Rock County specific information:
SPENDING & JOBS
- Visitors to Janesville spent $145 million in 2018 – up 2.7%
- Visitors to Rock County spent $251 million in 2018 – up 3%
- Visitor activity in Janesville sustained a total of 1,209 jobs, with income surpassing $28 million
- 4,219 jobs with a total personal income of $100 million were supported by visitors to Rock County last year
TAX REVENUE
- Visitors to Rock County generated $30 million in state and local taxes during 2018
- Including indirect and induced impacts, tourism in Janesville generated $14.1 million in state and local taxes and $7.4 million in Federal taxes last year
SPENDING BY SECTOR
- The retail sector in Janesville received nearly $41 million from visitors in 2018
- Travelers in Janesville spent more than $38 million on food & beverages and $26 million in the lodging sector last year
- Traveler spending in recreation totaled over $30 million from 2018 visitors to Janesville
- Visitor spending in Janesville peaks in the 3rd quarter with $45 million in visitor sales
- Among key Janesville industries, spending growth was strongest in lodging and retail shopping

Knowing specific performance by sector and quarter not only allows us to better plan our marketing campaigns, but also allows us to better strategize for tourism product growth and development.”
The Department of Tourism worked with national research firms Tourism Economics and Longwoods International to produce their reports. The Janesville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau commissioned Tourism Economics to produce Janesville specific reports for the 2018 year.
The Janesville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (JACVB) is a private, non-profit Destination Marketing Organization, whose mission is to lead, support and promote tourism in the area by promoting Janesville as a prime destination for meetings and conventions, motorcoach and leisure travelers, thereby creating a positive economic impact on the community and enhancing the quality of life. The JACVB is funded by local hotel room tax and receives 60% of the room tax collected by the City of Janesville with the remainder going into the city’s general fund.
