The Janesville Catholic Schools Strategic Planning Team is recommending that St. Mary School discontinue the 6th through 8th grade.
The current students would transfer to nearby St. John Vianney School.
Concerned parents and parishioners are organizing for a meeting Wednesday night with the Diocese of Madison schools superintendent to share their concerns.
The group wants the opportunity to have their voices heard and propose alternate plans.
“Removal of the middle school at St. Mary will mean the end of our school,” group member Ryan Spies said in a statement. “Parents sent their kids to St. Mary with the expectation that they would graduate after the 8th grade. We fear that the school will not survive as an elementary school. Janesville has abundant elementary school choices, but far fewer PK-8 school choices.”
The parents say the strategic planning team had been meeting for years, but they just heard about the proposed school change last week.
Dan Cunningham, another parent, says enrollment at St. Mary School is up, which was not the case for St. Patrick School, which closed completely last year.
