Wisconsin leads nation in farm bankruptcies

The American Farm Bureau Federation reports Wisconsin leads the nation in farm bankruptcies. Rock County’s UW-Extension Agriculture Agent Nick Baker says low dairy prices are a big part of the problem. Baker says prices have been so low, farmers are milking their cows each day only to lose money. He says consumers aren’t drinking as much milk and trade disputes have also weakened the market. He adds many farmers are being forced to either grow, consolidate, or find niche markets to survive. The report from the American Farm Bureau Federation puts the nationwide increase in bankruptcies at 24% over last year. This is the second year Wisconsin has topped the list.
