Police are seeking a Beloit man wanted for attempted first-degree intentional homicide in a suspected shooting last weekend.

Rock County Judge Barbara McCrory authorized a warrant for the arrest of 25-year-old Virgil L. Tate Jr., who is also charged with first-degree recklessly endangering safety.

A Rock County Sheriff’s Deputy said the victim of the shooting identified Tate as the man he was trying to purchase drugs from on December 7.

The victim told police he met Tate in the parking lot of the Kwik Trip on Highway 51, where he ran off with the drugs on foot without paying Tate.

Tate is accused of shooting at him multiple times, hitting him in the left thigh.

The victim then ran into traffic on Highway 51, grabbed onto the passenger mirror of a passing SUV and asked the driver to let him into the vehicle.

The criminal complaint says the driver eventually let the victim into his vehicle in the five-points area of Janesville.

The driver told the deputy he dropped the victim off at Mercy Hospital, but the victim did not check into the emergency room until two days later, when police made contact with him.

Court records show police had already issued a warrant for Tate’s arrest on June 14 for two cocaine charges.
