An 11th hour plea deal may be in the works for a former Beloit man who’s already serving 50 years in prison for two violent sexual assaults nearly 20 years ago.
State Prosecutor Amber Hahn told the court she had been in discussions with Jason A. Smith’s attorney as recently as Thursday morning.
If an agreement can’t be made both sides are prepared to go to trial on Monday.
Smith is charged with two counts of second degree sexual assault of a child by use of a dangerous weapon in connection with an attack on a 13-year-old girl in an alley-way in Beloit in July of 2000.
