Money and drugs appear to be a driving force behind the Janesville double homicide on the morning of February 10.
Prosecutors filed the criminal complaint against former Wisconsin Badgers receiver Marcus T. Randle El on Friday, formally charging him with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide, armed carjacking and possession of a firearm by a felon.
He is the only suspect police have announced in the shooting deaths of 30-year-old Seairaha Winchester and 27-year-old Brittany McAdory.
Police spoke with friends of Winchester, who said Randle El threatened to kill Winchester in the days leading up to the homicide. The witnesses said Randle El was known to be a drug dealer, and he accused Winchester and others of stealing from him.
Detectives spoke with multiple people who claimed Winchester owed Randle El money for drugs, and she did not feel safe because of Randle El’s conduct. One person showed police a message from Randle El that indicated Winchester owed him $320.
The criminal complaint does not provide many details into what happened in the moments leading up to the fatal shooting, but officers did report evidence of Randle El attempting to burn McAdory’s vehicle after allegedly stealing it and driving it to the Chicago area immediately after the homicides.
Police said he was also seen on surveillance footage at a gas station in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, near where McAdory’s vehicle was first found pulled over on the side of the road. Audio from the footage quoted the gas station clerk as observing blood on Randle El’s hands, according to the complaint.
Randle El turned himself in to Chicago police on February 15 and is awaiting extradition to Rock County.
