Janesville City Council to vote on pushing back deadline for property tax payments

The Janesville City Council is expected to approve a resolution to waive interest and penalties on property taxes through October 1.
The tax relief is available due to a law passed by the state legislature this spring and approved by the Rock County Board last month.
The resolution would give local residents and businesses more time to pay their property taxes because of the economic impact of COVID-19.
The waiver would only apply to property owners who are not delinquent on their property taxes, and it only applies to tax payments due on or after April 1.
City Clerk-Treasurer Dave Godek identified nearly 6,400 Janesville properties that qualify for the waiver.
The resolution previously passed by the county board will have the county settle the entire tax roll with the city in August, before tax payments are made in October, so Janesville will not see a negative impact on its cash flow.
The county board’s resolution allows all area municipalities to decide whether or not to waive their local tax interest and penalties.
The item before the Janesville City Council falls under its consent agenda, which will be passed by the council without a vote unless a council member chooses to vote on it separately.
