Carelessness may be responsible for most residential fires. Beloit Fire Department Lieutenant Jeremy Flanagan says, as part of Fire Prevention Week officials want residents to realize half of all fires start in the kitchen. Flanagan says kitchen fires are five times more likely than the second leading cause, which is related to heating. He also says closing doors saves lives and property. Bedroom doors should be closed while sleeping, and Flanagan adds doors should be closed as you escape a fire. This prevents oxygen feeding the flames. Residents are also urged to make sure all smoke detectors are in working order.
