City of Beloit Police are increasing the use of license plate readers to catch wanted criminals.
The devices allow the department to cross-reference license plates in order to identify possible suspects.
Prior to the advent of the devices, police relied on witnesses or police sightings to identify suspect vehicles.
A donation of 20-thousand dollars from Greater Beloit Area Crime Stoppers will underwrite the purchase of license plate readers and cameras by Beloit Police.
The purchase and locations of the cameras are currently in the planning stages.
The department will wait on proposals on the equipment from possible vendors before moving forward with future plans.
