Mary Elise Antoine is the author of the book, Five Black Women on the Upper Mississippi 1800 – 1850.

The book presents the stories of four Black women who were born into slavery and obtained their freedom. At various times, all four women lived at Prairie du Chien. The book explores the history of slavery in what is now Wisconsin and particularly the fact that slavery persisted here well into the 1800s, despite the fact that it was illegal.
