The Rock County Clerk appears mostly optimistic about a number of proposals from Governor Tony Evers that he says will protect voting rights and democracy in Wisconsin.
The governor’s plan includes streamlining processes to make it easier for eligible Wisconsinites to register to vote and cast their ballot, ensuring voting equipment and databases are secure and well-maintained, and supporting local elections officials who work tirelessly to administer elections.
Rock County Clerk Lisa Tollefson says one of those proposals – allowing county or municipal clerks to canvass absentee ballots the day before an election – would definitely speed things up on election night.
Some of Evers’ other proposals include providing $172,000 for the Wisconsin Elections Commission to work with the Department of Transportation to implement automatic voter registration; and providing $400,000 to create a grant program for municipalities to purchase Badger Books.
