South Beloit to consider ordinance to allow backyard chickens

Multiple residents of South Beloit spoke out in favor of a possible ordinance which would allow chickens to be kept in their backyards.
One resident says not only do chickens provide eggs, but they can act as a natural deterrent to pests such as bugs and mice, and they can provide educational opportunities for kids and grandkids.
Another resident says South Beloit is an outlier in the area when it comes to allowing chickens on people’s properties, as both Beloit and the Village of Roscoe have ordinances which do allow for the keeping of backyard chickens in some capacity.
The council took no action on an ordinance, and city staff said they’ll do more research and present that at a future meeting.
