A 2019 Delavan-Darien High School graduate is accused of being a spy for China.
22-year-old U.S. Navy sailor Jinchao “Patrick” Wei was arrested last Wednesday on espionage charges as he arrived for work at Naval Base San Diego.
According to the indictment in February of 2022 Wei began communicating with an intelligence officer from Peoples’s Republic of China. He’s accused of sending photographs and videos of the ship he was assigned to, technical manuals for ship systems, and information about the locations of various Navy ships and their systems.
The Justice Department also charged sailor 26-year-old Wenheng Zhao, 26, based at Naval Base Ventura County, north of Los Angeles, with conspiring to collect nearly $15,000 in bribes from a Chinese intelligence officer in exchange for information, photos and videos of involving Navy exercises, operations and facilities between August 2021 through at least this May.
